Collections
How to organise the problem archive with collections – create, nest, move and delete them, and add problems to them.
Collections are folders for organising the problem archive, for example “Arrays”. They can be nested, and a problem can be in several. Collections don’t change what students see: courses get problems through topics and problem sets.
The collection tree is to the left of the problem list (Problem archive → Problems). Clicking a collection lists the problems of that collection and every collection inside it, and adds ?collection=… to the address. The number beside a collection is how many of those problems you can see. All problems shows the whole archive. The What are collections? button beside the heading explains them briefly.
Who sees and changes a collection
Section titled “Who sees and changes a collection”| Collection | Who sees it |
|---|---|
| Organisation | Staff of that organisation. |
| Private | The owner, organisation admins and people with a grant. |
| Public | Every archive user (collections imported from the old system are public). |
A collection also widens who sees its problems: anyone who sees the collection sees the problems in it.
Changing a collection – renaming, moving or deleting it, creating collections inside it, adding and removing problems – is open to:
- its owner;
- admins of its organisation;
- people with an edit grant on it;
- anyone who can change a collection it sits in;
- system administrators.
Collections you can change have a ⋯ menu in the tree.
Grants on a collection reach everything inside it: someone with an edit grant can also change the problems in the collection. Such grants were imported from the old system; the app can’t give new ones yet.
New collection
Section titled “New collection”- Above the tree, click + (New collection). To put it inside another collection, choose New collection inside in that collection’s ⋯ menu.
- Enter a Name (up to 120 characters).
- At the top level, choose Who can browse it: Organisation (the default when you belong to one) or Private. If you work in several organisations, pick the Organisation.
- Click Create collection.
A collection inside another one is shared like the collection it sits in; the dialog says so. Collections nest at most 6 levels deep.
You can also create a collection while creating a problem, or when adding problems before you have a collection of your own.
Rename, move and delete
Section titled “Rename, move and delete”The collection’s ⋯ menu (on narrow screens, Collection actions):
- Rename… – enter the new name and click Save.
- Move to… – pick Top level or a collection you can edit and click Move here. Everything inside moves too. You can also drag a collection onto another one in the tree.
- Delete… – confirm with Delete collection. Problems are never deleted: they stay in the archive and in their other collections. Anyone who could edit them only through this collection loses that right.
What you can’t do:
- move a collection into itself or into one of its own collections;
- nest deeper than 6 levels;
- move a collection somewhere more people could see or edit its problems, unless you can edit all of them;
- delete a collection with collections inside – move or delete those first.
Collections never change course work: individual tasks come from each topic’s own task pool (see Topics), so adding problems to a collection or removing them changes nothing for students.
Adding problems to a collection
Section titled “Adding problems to a collection”There are three ways to add a problem:
- the row’s ⋯ menu → Add to collection…;
- with several problems selected – Add to collection… in the bar;
- in the problem’s Collections card – Add to a collection… or Change collections…: tick every collection it belongs in and click Save.
Only collections you can edit are offered. The problem is added at the end of the collection and stays in its other collections. In the Collections card, a lock marks collections you can’t change; those stay as they are.
The notice says how many problems were added, how many were already there and how many were left out. A problem is left out when adding it would let more people see or change it: you can add someone else’s problem only when it is public and the collection gives nobody edit rights; otherwise you need edit rights on the problem.
Removing problems from a collection
Section titled “Removing problems from a collection”- Select the collection in the tree.
- Tick the problems.
- Click Remove from “…”.
Only problems directly in this collection are removed. Remove problems of a collection inside it by opening that collection. The problems stay in the archive. You can also untick the collection in the problem’s Collections card.
Keyboard
Section titled “Keyboard”In the collection tree, ↑ ↓ move, → expands or goes deeper and ← collapses or goes up. The full list is on the keyboard shortcuts page.
