Keyboard shortcuts for students
Search, tabs, the problem list, the code editor, submissions and the inbox from the keyboard.
Press ? anywhere in the app to see the list of shortcuts. It is also in the account menu under Keyboard shortcuts.
Shortcuts work when you are not typing in a field. Search (Ctrl K) works while typing too, except in the code editor.

Problems
Section titled “Problems”In a course’s Problems:
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Next or previous problem in the list | J / K |
| Open the highlighted problem | Enter |
On a problem’s page:
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Next problem | J |
| Previous problem | K |
| Open the editor | E |
E works on programming problems you can solve right now. Excel tasks are solved by downloading and uploading a workbook, so they have no editor.
Code editor
Section titled “Code editor”The editor shows the same list under Editor options → Keyboard shortcuts.
| Action | Windows, Linux, ChromeOS | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Run samples | Ctrl Enter | ⌘ Enter |
| Submit | Ctrl Shift Enter | ⌘ ⇧ Enter |
| Save draft | Ctrl S | ⌘ S |
| Command palette | F1 | F1 |
| Find | Ctrl F | ⌘ F |
| Replace | Ctrl H | ⌥ ⌘ F |
| Go to line | Ctrl G | ⌃ G |
| Add a cursor | Alt + click, Ctrl D | ⌥ + click, ⌘ D |
| Fold or unfold a block | Ctrl Shift [ | ⌥ ⌘ [ |
| Comment or uncomment lines | Ctrl / | ⌘ / |
| Word wrap | Alt Z | ⌥ Z |
| Tab moves focus | Ctrl M | ⌃ ⇧ M |
- Run, Submit and Save also work while focus is elsewhere in the workspace (outside the editor), as long as no dialog or menu is open.
- While the editor has focus, the shortcuts for everywhere are off: Ctrl K belongs to the editor there. To search, leave the editor first.
- Tab normally indents code. Press Ctrl M (⌃ ⇧ M on a Mac) so that Tab and Shift Tab move focus out of the editor; press it again to switch back.
- Drag the gap between panes to resize them, or double-click it to hide or show the statement or the tests. When the gap has keyboard focus, the arrow keys resize and Enter hides or shows.
Submissions
Section titled “Submissions”In a course’s Submissions:
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Next or previous row | J / K |
| Open or close the result in the side panel | Space |
| Close the result | Esc |
While a result is open, J and K change it along with the row.
Inbox and messages
Section titled “Inbox and messages”The Inbox works like Linear’s:
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Next or previous notification | J / K (↓ / ↑ in the list too) |
| Show the notification beside the list | Space |
| Open what the notification is about | Enter |
| Mark as read or unread | U |
| Archive | E or Backspace |
| Snooze | H |
| Close the notification | Esc |
In Messages, move between conversations with J / K (↓ / ↑ in the list too). Send a message with Ctrl Enter (⌘ Enter on a Mac).
- Side panels (such as a submission’s result): Esc closes them. With the panel’s edge focused, ← / → change its width (bigger steps with Shift), Home / End set the narrowest or widest, and a double-click on the edge restores the usual width. The sidebar’s width works the same way.
- Settings: Esc leaves Settings and takes you back where you were.
- Submission calendar on My work: pick a day with the arrow keys.
