Account security

Changing your password, signed-in devices, signing out on other devices, and linking Google or GitHub accounts.

Everything about signing in is in Settings → Security (/settings/security).

  1. Under Password, select Change password….
  2. Enter your Current password, a New password, and Repeat new password.
  3. Select Change password. To leave without changing it, select Cancel.

The new password follows the same rules as when you change a temporary password. After the change you stay signed in on this device, you are signed out on every other device, and the app takes you back to Security.

The list shows every device (strictly speaking, every browser) where you are signed in now:

  • a name made of the browser and the operating system, such as “Chrome on Windows”;
  • This device next to the one you are using now (it always comes first);
  • when the device was last active, and when you signed in on it.

To sign out one device, select Sign out next to it.

To sign out every other device:

  1. Select Sign out everywhere else….
  2. Confirm with Sign out other devices.

This device stays signed in, and a line under the list says how many devices were signed out. On a signed-out device, live updates stop within about a second, and the next action there leads to the sign-in page. Work not yet saved there may be lost.

When you are not signed in anywhere else, the list says “You aren’t signed in anywhere else.”

A sign-in also ends by itself: after 30 days without using the device, and in any case 90 days after signing in. Changing your password, or a temporary password from your teacher, signs out every other device.

This part shows when your system administrator has turned on Google or GitHub sign-in (or when you already have a linked account). Once an account is linked, you can select Continue with Google or Continue with GitHub on the sign-in page. Your password keeps working.

  1. Select Link next to Google or GitHub.
  2. On Google’s or GitHub’s page, choose your account and allow signing in with it.
  3. Back in the app, you see a message such as “Your Google account is linked. You can now sign in with it.” The row shows the account’s email address (for GitHub, the username with @) and the date you linked it.

Rules:

  • You can link one account per service. To use a different one, unlink the old one first.
  • A Google or GitHub account can be linked to one user only. If it is already linked to another account, you see “This Google account is already linked to another account.”
  • Finish linking within 10 minutes, in the same browser.
  • From Google or GitHub, the app receives only the account’s identifier and email address (and, from GitHub, the username). They show only here and are used only for signing in.
  1. Select Unlink next to the linked account.
  2. Confirm with Unlink account.

From then on you sign in with your username and password, as before. You can link it again at any time.

Apps you allowed to use your account – such as the VS Code extension – are listed under Connected apps, with when you connected each one and when it was last used.

To disconnect one:

  1. Select Disconnect next to it.
  2. Confirm with Disconnect.

The app is signed out on every device at once and can’t use your account until you allow it again. Files it saved on your computer stay there. Changing your password and Sign out everywhere else… disconnect your apps too.

Under Sign out, select Sign out to end your session on this device. The account menu has the same option.
