Roles and permissions
What an owner, teacher, assistant, group admin and organisation admin can do in a course, and who sees which students' data.
Course staff have three roles. You see and change them under People → Staff.
| Role | In short |
|---|---|
| Owner | Manages the course, its staff and its groups. A course always has at least one owner. |
| Teacher | Teaches: topics, groups, students and settings. |
| Assistant | Helps: sees everything, answers students, gives individual tasks. |
Some people reach a course without a course role:
- Group admin: an admin of a group attached to the course (or of its parent group). Sees only the students enrolled through their groups.
- Organisation admin: sees every course of the organisation in the sidebar’s Courses list (archived ones only where they are its staff) and under Administration → Courses.
- System admin: can do everything in every course.
When you hold several roles (for example teacher and group admin), you have all of their permissions together. The course overview’s subtitle shows your strongest role.

¹ An assistant who is also an admin of groups can add and detach only the groups they administer. ² Only between groups they administer themselves (both the group the student leaves and the one they join).
When you can’t do something, the button is hidden or the page explains why (for example “You can see this course’s topics but not change them. Course owners and teachers can.”). Permissions are always checked again on the server: hiding a button is never the only protection.
Who sees students’ data
Section titled “Who sees students’ data”- Students see only their own progress, submissions, results and conversations. Other students’ submissions, results, similarity and quiz answers are never sent to them. The one exception is the reduced progress sheet of their own group (names and Solved / Attempted / Not started per common problem), while Students see the progress sheet is on (Course settings).
- Owners, teachers, assistants and organisation admins see every student of the course.
- A group admin sees only students enrolled in the course through a group they administer. Individually enrolled students and other groups’ students never appear for them: not in lists, progress, exports or counts.
- A conversation belongs to one student. That student and the course staff who can see that student read it.
- Similarity also compares with students of other courses, but you see another student’s name and course only when you can see that student. Otherwise it says “A student in another course” or “A student outside your groups”.
- Exports (the progress CSV, the Excel results workbook, the quiz CSVs) contain only the students you can see and are never kept in any shared cache.
- An archived course can be opened only by its staff and organisation admins; students and group admins don’t see it.
- A removed staff member loses access to the course, but what they did stays recorded.
Course owners, teachers and group admins can reset only students’ passwords. Teachers’ and other staff members’ passwords are reset by an organisation admin.
