Groups

The organisation's groups table, subgroups, new groups, repeated names and actions on several groups.

Groups bring their members into courses. When a course’s teacher adds a group to the course (People → Add groups), all its members are enrolled as students. Members added to the group later join by themselves; members removed from it leave the course unless another of their groups keeps them in it. Submissions and marks always stay.

A group can have one parent group, for example to split a group into two halves. There is only one level: a subgroup has no subgroups of its own, and a group that has subgroups can’t go inside another group. The parent group must belong to the same organisation.

When a parent group is added to a course, the members of its subgroups are enrolled too.

Administration → Groups (/admin/groups) shows the groups of one organisation. If you administer several organisations, choose one at the top.

  • Active / Archived, with the number of groups.
  • Search groups or teachers searches the names of the group, its parent group and its teachers, ignoring Lithuanian accents.
  • Teacher: All teachers, No teacher or one teacher.
  • Columns: Name, Teachers, Members, Courses, Created. Subgroups sit under their parent group and can be collapsed.

The search and filters stay in the address. Select a group to open its page.

Groups may share a name (for example two halves of “10A” with different teachers) as long as their teachers or parent groups tell them apart. Such groups are always shown with their teacher, and the table adds the hint “the teacher tells them apart”.

When two groups have the same name, parent group and teachers, a warning appears: rename one or change its teacher. The app doesn’t let you create, rename or move a group so that nothing tells it apart from another.

  1. Select New groups.
  2. In Names, enter the names one per line or separated by commas. A range such as 1A–1K or 5–8 adds every group in between.
  3. Optionally choose a Teacher. They become the groups’ teacher (their admin) and a teacher of the organisation.
  4. Optionally choose a parent in Inside group, or leave None (top level).
  5. Check the Preview: each group says New, how many other groups have that name, or “Already exists with this teacher: skipped”.
  6. Select Create N groups.

Limits: up to 60 groups at a time, up to 40 groups in one range, names up to 80 characters.

Select groups (or Select all groups shown). An action bar appears at the bottom:

  • Set teacher…: choose one or more active users of the organisation. They become the groups’ teachers (their admins) and teachers of the organisation. With Remove the groups’ other teachers on, the other teachers are removed.
  • Move under group…: choose a top-level group, or Top level (no parent group). Groups with subgroups, and groups that would clash with a group of the same name and teacher, aren’t moved; the dialog says how many. Members join the courses of the new parent group and leave those of the old one; submissions and marks stay.
  • Archive…: archives only groups that no active course uses (neither the group nor its parent group) and that have no active subgroups. Subgroups archived in the same batch don’t count. The dialog lists the groups that can’t be archived yet, and why.
  • Restore… (in Archived): a subgroup comes back only together with its archived parent group, or once the parent is active.

An archived group leaves the lists and can’t be added to courses. Its members and history stay. Groups are never deleted.
