Users

The users list, filters, CSV export, the user panel, password resets and other account actions.

Administration → Users (/admin/users) lists the accounts of your organisations. Create new accounts with Create users; see Creating users.

  • Search: Search by name or username.
  • Organisation (if you administer several), Group and Role: Admins, Teachers or Students.
  • Status: All, Active, Must change password, Disabled.

Each row shows a status icon, the name and username, Groups, Role and Last sign-in. A page shows 50 users; Next shows more. Filters stay in the address.

The Role column shows the person’s most significant role in your organisations:

Role Meaning
System admin Can see and change everything on the platform.
Organisation admin Manages the organisation’s users, groups and courses.
Teacher Can create courses and use the problem library.
Course staff Teaches or helps in a course, or runs a group, but has no teacher role in the organisation.
Student Enrolled in a course.

The Teachers filter shows both teachers and course staff.

Status Meaning
Active Can sign in.
Must change password Has a temporary password and chooses their own at the next sign-in.
Disabled Can’t sign in.
No password Has no password, so can’t sign in with one.

Export CSV downloads the list with the current filters: every page, up to 5,000 users. Columns: Username, Given name, Family name, Organisations, Groups, Role, Status, Last sign-in, Created. The file contains no passwords.

Select a row to open the user panel on the right; Esc closes it. The panel has its own address, so you can send a link to it to another admin.

  • Account: username, status, Password (for example “Temporary, issued by …” or “Imported from the old system”), last sign-in, Signed-in devices and the creation date.
  • Memberships: organisations, groups and courses with roles, limited to your organisations.
  • Recent changes: the latest administrative actions on the account, with who did them and when.

The most frequent actions are buttons at the top of the panel: Reset password…, Make teacher…, Add to group…. The rest are in More actions (⋯): Edit name…, Move to group…, Remove teacher role…, Disable account… or Enable account….

Only actions you are allowed to take are shown. When you can’t disable the account or reset its password, a note under the buttons explains why, for example “This person also belongs to an organisation you don’t administer. Ask a system admin.” Every action asks for confirmation first.

  1. Select Reset password….
  2. Confirm with Reset password.
  3. Pass the temporary password on to the user (Copy password). It is shown only once.

The account is signed out on every device, and at the next sign-in the user chooses their own password. A temporary password has 12 characters in three groups of four (such as k7mq-x3pd-2hwe), without look-alike characters. It also lifts a sign-in lock after too many failed attempts.

An organisation admin can reset the passwords of their organisation’s members, teachers included. Organisation admins’ passwords are reset by a system administrator, and system administrators’ passwords can’t be reset this way. Change your own password in Settings → Security → Change password….

Make teacher… lets a user create courses and use the problem archive in the organisation, without administering it. It is offered for organisation members with an active account; organisation admins already have these rights.

Someone who becomes a group’s teacher gets the teacher role automatically, and an organisation admin whose admin role is removed stays a teacher.

Remove teacher role…: current courses and groups stay, but no new courses can be created. The problem archive stays open to them only while they teach a course or a group.

  • Add to group…: choose a group and select Continue. Before you confirm, you see which courses the user will join.
  • Move to group…: from a group the user is a member of to another group of the same organisation. You see how their courses change.

Submissions, marks and messages always stay. How groups relate to courses is described on The group page.

Edit name…: the given and family name. Names may contain letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes. The username doesn’t change.

Disable account…: the user is signed out on every device and can’t sign in until the account is enabled again. Submissions and marks stay. Enable account…: they can sign in again with the same password.

An organisation admin can disable an account only when every organisation the user belongs to is one they administer. You can’t disable your own account or any organisation admin’s account: organisation admins and users who also belong to other organisations are disabled by a system administrator. A system administrator’s account can’t be disabled while it holds that role.
