Problem sets

How to create and manage problem sets – reusable, ordered lists of problems that course topics use.

A problem set is an ordered list of library problems that course topics can use. A course topic keeps its problems in a set, so editing the set changes every course that uses it.

Sets are under Problem archive → Problem sets; the address is /library/sets.

Each row shows the title, the number of problems, the owner (or No owner), the sharing, and how many courses and topics use the set.

  • Search – by title.
  • In use / Archived.
  • All / Mine / Organisation / Public.

Up to 300 sets are shown; when there are more, search to narrow the list. Lists the app made for a single course topic are not listed (see Sets in course topics).

The row’s ⋯ menu: Open, Duplicate…, Archive… or Delete…, and Restore for an archived set.

A set is visible to the same people as a problem with the same sharing (see Problem archive). Its owner, admins of its organisation and system administrators can change it. Anyone who sees a set can duplicate it.

  1. Problem sets → New set.
  2. Enter a Name (for example “Loops: practice”).
  3. Choose Who can find it: Private or Organisation; with several organisations, pick the Organisation.
  4. Click Create set. The set’s page opens; the set starts empty.
  1. On the set’s page, click Add problems.
  2. Search by title or number and, if needed, pick a Collection. Up to 40 results are shown.
  3. Tick problems. Those already in the set are marked Already in the set.
  4. Click Add N problems. They are added at the end, in the order you ticked them.

Only active problems you can see are offered. A set holds at most 200 problems.

In the problem list:

  • the Move up and Move down arrows change the order;
  • Remove from the set takes a problem out (it stays in the archive);
  • the labels Not published, Archived and Needs review remind you that a problem needs publishing, restoring or reviewing.

Above the list you see how many courses a change reaches: Changes apply to N courses, the courses you teach, and how many topics use the set.

The Settings card → Edit…:

  • Name and Description;
  • Sharing: Private, Organisation (when the set belongs to one) or Public;
  • Default mode: Practice or Test;
  • Default test length in minutes.

The mode and length are defaults: a topic starts from them, and each topic can change them.

Duplicate… creates a new set with the same problems, order and defaults. The copy is private and belongs to you; courses keep using the original.

The set page’s Archive or delete section:

  • A set no topic uses can be deleted for good. Its problems stay in the archive.
  • A set that topics use can only be archived. They keep it and every result stays, but it can’t be attached to new topics until you restore it. An archived set can’t be changed.

To restore: Archived → the row menu → Restore, or Restore on the archived set’s page.

  • In the course’s Problems, a topic’s Add problems opens a dialog; its From topics and sets tab lists your courses’ topics and the archive’s problem sets (Mine, Organisation, Public) on the left. Pick a set, tick problems and add them to the topic.
  • Several topics can use the same list, for example after a course was copied. When you change such a topic’s problems, the app asks where the change should apply: Change only here (a copy of the list is made for this course) or Change everywhere (only for people who can change the set).
  • Copies the app makes for a single topic belong to the course and are not listed among the archive’s problem sets.
