The group page

A group's members, teachers, courses and subgroups; adding and moving members; renaming and archiving.

Open a group’s page by selecting the group in Administration → Groups (address /admin/groups/<id>).

Under the name you see which group it is in (or Top level), its teachers (or a No teacher warning), the number of members and courses, and when it was created. When other groups have the same name, a link leads to them.

The header has Rename…, Change parent… and Archive… (for an archived group, Restore group).

The table lists the members’ names, usernames and Also in (their other groups).

  • Add members: search by name or username and pick users of the organisation. Only people who already belong to the organisation can be added; for new people, create accounts first.
  • Create accounts opens Create users with this group chosen.
  • With members selected: Move to group… (to another active group of the organisation) or Remove from group…. Removed members stay users of the organisation.

Before every change of members you see how course enrolments change: how many join, how many leave and how many stay through another group. Submissions, marks and messages always stay.

  • A new member joins every course the group or its parent group is attached to.
  • A member who leaves every group that brought them into a course leaves that course. Their history stays.
  • A student a teacher removed from a course earlier comes back only through a group they have just joined.

A group’s teachers are its admins: they add the group to their courses and see its students (and its subgroups’ students). Group teachers don’t open Administration.

  • Add teacher: choose active users of the organisation who aren’t in this group yet. They also become teachers of the organisation.
  • The row menu has Open user and Remove from teachers…. A removed teacher no longer sees this group’s students in their courses, but keeps the organisation’s teacher role.
  • The same person can’t be both a member and a teacher of a group.
  • No teacher role means the group’s teacher no longer has the organisation’s teacher role (for example, it was removed).

Courses lists the courses this group takes, active and archived, with the number of students. through the parent group means the parent group is attached to the course. Select a course to open it.

A group is attached to a course not here but by the course’s teacher: the course → People → Add groups.

Subgroups lists the group’s subgroups with their teachers and number of members. Members of subgroups also join the courses this group is attached to.

  • Rename…: a name up to 80 characters. It must not match another group with the same parent group and teachers.
  • Change parent…: choose a top-level group, or none. Members join the courses of the new parent group and leave those of the old one. A group that has subgroups can’t go inside another group.
  • Archive…: possible when no active course uses the group or its parent group, and it has no active subgroups. Otherwise the dialog explains what to change first.
  • Restore group: the archived group comes back with its members and teachers. A subgroup can be restored only when its parent group is active.
