Tabs
How to open, pin, close and reopen tabs in the app, and how each tab keeps its own history.
The app has its own tab bar, like a browser. Each tab has its own address, its own Back / Forward history, and remembers how far down the page you scrolled. You can keep several problems, a statement and your submissions open and switch between them quickly.
The tab bar shows on screens wider than 768 px. Phones have no tab bar: you see the open page only.

students/basics/tab-menuHow tabs open
Section titled “How tabs open”- Navigation (the sidebar, a course’s pages) changes the current tab.
- A problem, the code editor, a quiz, a wiki page, a favorite problem, or what you open from the inbox opens in a tab of its own. If a tab already shows it, the app switches to that tab instead of opening a second one.
- Ctrl-click (⌘-click on a Mac) or a middle-click on any link in the app opens it in a new tab in the background: you stay where you are.
- Right-click a problem or a similar link for Open in new tab and Copy link.
- The + button at the end of the tab bar (New tab, Alt N) opens a new tab with My work.
A new tab appears right after the current one. A tab’s title and icon show what is open in it.
The tab menu
Section titled “The tab menu”Right-click a tab:
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Duplicate tab | Opens a copy with the same history. |
| Pin tab / Unpin tab | A pinned tab stays at the start of the bar and shows its icon only. |
| Copy link | Copies the tab’s address. |
| Close tab | Closes this tab. |
| Close other tabs | Closes every other tab except pinned ones. |
| Reopen closed tab | Brings back the last tab you closed. |
Close and reopen
Section titled “Close and reopen”- Hover over a tab and select ×, middle-click it, or press Alt W.
- A pinned tab has no ×: close it from its menu, with a middle-click or with Alt W.
- Closing the last tab opens a new one with My work.
- Reopen closed tab (Alt Shift T) brings back the last closed tab with its whole history. The last 10 closed tabs are remembered, so repeating it brings back earlier ones too.
Pin and reorder
Section titled “Pin and reorder”- Pinned tabs always come first and take little room: only the icon shows, and the title appears when you hover.
- Drag tabs to reorder them. Pinned tabs stay in front.
Each tab’s history
Section titled “Each tab’s history”- The Back and Forward buttons (the arrows at the left of the tab bar) move through this tab’s history only. Your browser’s Back and Forward buttons work inside the tab too.
- When you switch to another tab and come back, you see the same page, scrolled to where you left it.
- Each tab remembers up to 50 pages of history.
What the app remembers
Section titled “What the app remembers”- Open and pinned tabs, with their history, are kept in this browser, separately for each user: next time you sign in they are where you left them. Other devices and browsers do not have them.
- Up to 24 tabs can be open at once. Opening more closes the oldest unpinned tab automatically (never the current one).
- You can copy and send links to pages of the app: they work in either language. Whoever opens a link sees only what they are allowed to see.
Keyboard shortcuts
Section titled “Keyboard shortcuts”Shortcuts work when you are not typing in a field. Press Alt combinations with the left Alt key; on a Mac, Alt is ⌥.
| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| New tab | Alt N |
| Close tab | Alt W |
| Go to tab 1–8 | Alt 1 … 8 |
| Go to the last tab | Alt 9 |
| Previous or next tab | Alt [ / Alt ] |
| Reopen closed tab | Alt Shift T |
| Open a link in a new background tab | Ctrl-click (⌘-click on a Mac) |
Every shortcut: Keyboard shortcuts.
