Creating and editing pages

A new page, the editor, automatic saving, publishing and the page's settings.

  1. Open Wiki and select New page at the top right.
  2. Enter a Title (up to 200 characters).
  3. Choose Who can read it: Organisation or Public. If you work in several organisations, also choose the Organisation.
  4. Select Create page. The new page opens in the editor.

The page starts as a draft that only its editors see. Who else can edit it depends on its readers: an organisation page is edited by all of that organisation’s editors, a public page only by you (see Wiki overview).

If you can’t edit pages in any organisation (for example, you are only a course assistant), the Organisation option is unavailable and you can create public pages only. To create a subpage, use Add subpage; see Subpages and page order.

A page you can edit opens straight in the editor; there is no separate “Edit” button. It is the same editor as for problem statements: headings, lists, code, images, equations, notes and warnings. Wiki pages have no sample tests or hints.

  • / opens the block menu, [[ links another page, $ starts an equation.
  • Write and Preview switch between editing and how readers will see the page.
  • Pages in the header opens the wiki’s page tree in a side sheet.
  • The editor’s keyboard shortcuts are on the staff keyboard shortcuts page.

The title and text save by themselves:

  • one second after you stop typing;
  • when you leave the editor (for example, to use the settings);
  • when you switch browser tabs or minimise the browser;
  • when you leave the page, the last change is sent.

The header shows the save state:

State Meaning
Saving… The change is on its way.
Saved Everything is saved. Point at it to see the time.
Not saved Saving failed. Your text stays on screen; select Retry.

If another editor saved the page while you were typing, your change is not saved and the header says “Someone else changed this page.” Your text stays on screen. Choose:

  • Keep mine saves your text over the other editor’s changes;
  • Load theirs reloads the page with the other editor’s text, and your unsaved changes are lost.

The app keeps earlier versions of a page by itself: when you start editing, every 10 minutes during a long session, when you take over someone else’s text, when you finish editing, and when you restore a version. History in the header lists them: open one to read it or compare it with the page now, and restore it if you need it back. Only the page’s editors see the history; see Version history.

  1. Select Publish in the header. The text on screen is saved first.
  2. Every reader of the page can now see it, and the header shows Published instead of the button.

To hide a published page again, select Unpublish in the settings: it becomes a draft that only editors see. An archived page can’t be published; restore it first.

Insert an image from the block menu (/ → Image) or the toolbar.

  • PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP up to 5 MB. SVG is not accepted.
  • Metadata (such as where a photo was taken) is removed before the image is stored.
  • The image is stored with the page and shown only to people who can read the page.

The page settings are to the right of the editor, or below it in a narrower window.

Field What it holds
Status Draft, Published or Archived.
Readers Public or an organisation. Only system administrators can change it.
Location Where the page is in the tree. Select it to open Move to….
Subpages How many subpages the page has.
Owner Who created the page. Only system administrators can change it.
Last change When the text last changed, and who changed it.
Created When the page was created.

A published page’s settings have an Unpublish button. The Links here card shows how many problems and pages point to the page, with the button to remove it; see Archiving and deleting.
