Keyboard shortcuts for staff

The inbox, messages, the progress sheet, topics, the problem picker and the statement editor from the keyboard.

Press ? anywhere in the app to see the shortcuts that work everywhere. They work when you are not typing in a field. On a Mac, use ⌘ for Ctrl and ⌥ for Alt. Press Alt combinations with the left Alt key (on a Lithuanian keyboard the right one, AltGr, types digits).

Action Keys
Search Ctrl K
Show or hide the sidebar [
New tab / close tab Alt N / Alt W
Go to tab 1–8, or the last tab Alt 1 … 8, Alt 9
Previous or next tab Alt [ / Alt ]
Reopen closed tab Alt Shift T
Show keyboard shortcuts ?
Close a menu, dialog or side panel Esc

The full list with the Mac keys is on the students’ shortcuts page.

Action Key
Next or previous notification J / K (↓ / ↑ in the list too)
Show the notification beside the list Space
Open what the notification is about Enter
Mark as read or unread U
Archive E or Backspace
Snooze H
Close the notification Esc

In Messages, move between conversations with J / K and send a reply with Ctrl Enter.

Focus any tile of the sheet (with Tab, for example) and move with the keyboard:

Action Keys
Neighbouring tile ← → ↑ ↓
10 students up or down Page Up / Page Down
The student’s first or last tile Home / End
The sheet’s first or last tile Ctrl Home / Ctrl End
Open the best attempt (the one the tile shows) Enter
  • Esc closes an open submission or a student’s panel.
  • With the panel’s edge focused, ← / → change its width (bigger steps with Shift) and Home / End set the narrowest or widest; a double-click on the edge restores the usual width.
Action Keys
Move a problem up or down (with its handle focused) ↑ / ↓
Save a topic’s new title Enter
Cancel renaming Esc

In Add problems and in the people pickers (Add groups, Enrol students, Add staff), type a search first, then press ↓ to move into the results:

Action Keys
Next or previous result ↓ / ↑ (↑ on the first returns to the search)
First or last result Home / End
A page up or down (in the problem picker) Page Up / Page Down
Choose or unchoose Space
Choose or clear every shown result Ctrl A
Add the chosen ones Enter

While nothing is chosen, Enter chooses the highlighted result.

Trees (collections in the problem archive, the sources in the problem picker): ↑ ↓ move, → expands or goes in, ← collapses or goes up, Home / End go to the first or last.

The same editor is used for problem statements and wiki pages. While you type in it, the shortcuts for everywhere are off: Ctrl K makes a link here instead of opening search.

Action Windows, Linux, ChromeOS macOS
Heading Ctrl Alt 2 ⌘ ⌥ 2
Subheading Ctrl Alt 3 ⌘ ⌥ 3
Bold Ctrl B ⌘ B
Italic Ctrl I ⌘ I
Inline code Ctrl E ⌘ E
Bulleted list Ctrl Shift 8 ⌘ ⇧ 8
Numbered list Ctrl Shift 7 ⌘ ⇧ 7
Link Ctrl K ⌘ K
Equation Ctrl Shift E ⌘ ⇧ E
Move the block up or down Alt Shift ↑ / ↓ ⌥ ⇧ ↑ / ↓
Paste as plain text (a wiki page’s address stays an address) Ctrl Shift V ⌘ ⇧ V

While typing:

Type What happens
/ The block menu opens: sample test, equation, code, hint, image, note, warning, headings, lists (wiki pages have no sample tests or hints). Pick with ↑ ↓ and Enter or Tab.
[[ Searches the wiki; the page you pick becomes a link.
# or ## and a space at the start of a line A heading. ### and a space make a subheading.
$ … $ An inline formula.
$$ and a space on an empty line A display formula.
  • Enter opens a selected formula. In the formula field, Enter finishes (in a display formula Ctrl Enter, since Enter starts a new line).
  • Enter on the empty last line of a note or hint leaves it; Backspace in an empty note or hint removes it.
  • In the toolbar, move with ← → and Home / End.
  • Moving the caret onto a wiki link with the arrow keys shows the page’s preview; Esc closes it.

In the question form, Ctrl Enter saves the question.
