Question banks

How quiz questions are kept in banks and question groups, who sees them, and how to archive or delete questions.

Quiz questions are kept in the problem archive: Problem archive → Quiz questions; the address is /library/questions.

Concept What it is
Question bank A set of question groups, for example “Spreadsheets”. Shared like other library items.
Question group Interchangeable questions, for example “Formulas”. A quiz draws the number of questions you choose from each group, at random. A question group is not a course topic.
Question One of seven types (see Questions).

Questions are never copied into courses: every quiz attempt uses the questions of the shared bank.

The table lists the banks you can see: Bank, Groups, Questions (active ones), Sharing. Banks you can’t change are marked View only.

Sharing Who sees it and can use it in quizzes
Private The owner, admins of its organisation and people it is shared with.
Organisation Staff of the bank’s organisation.
Public Every teacher on the platform.

A bank (its groups and questions) can be changed by its owner, admins of its organisation, system administrators and people with an edit grant.

  1. Quiz questions → New bank.
  2. Enter a Name (up to 120 characters) and click Create bank.

The bank is shared with your organisation (private if you have none). Change the name and sharing with Bank settings on the bank’s page. Organisation is available only when the bank belongs to an organisation. Banks can’t be archived or deleted in the app yet.

The question groups are pills at the top (with their question counts), archived groups apart. The selected group is part of the address (?group=…). Below the pills you see how many quizzes use the group (Used by N quizzes or Not used by quizzes yet).

Each question’s row shows the start of its text, its version, Used in N attempts or Not used yet, and the labels Archived and Needs review (a question imported from the old system whose formatting was converted with warnings).

  1. On the bank page, click New group.
  2. Enter a Name (for example “Formulas”) and click Create group. Group names can’t repeat within a bank.

The group’s ⋯ menu:

  • Rename…;
  • Archive group – new quizzes can’t draw from it; quizzes that already do keep working. An archived group takes no new questions. Restore group brings it back;
  • Delete group… – only for an empty group no quiz uses. Otherwise archive it.
  1. Select a group.
  2. Click New question and choose the Question type. The button is disabled until a group exists (Create a question group first.).
  3. Fill in the question and click Save question (Ctrl Enter).

Every field is described in Questions.

A question row’s menu: Edit, Archive / Restore, Delete….

  • A question that was never drawn into a quiz attempt can be deleted for good (this can’t be undone).
  • A question used in attempts can only be archived: attempts, answers and marks keep it, and new attempts no longer draw it.

Archived questions stay in the group with the Archived label and no longer count among the questions available to quizzes. Before archiving, check that the group keeps enough questions for the quizzes that use it.

  • Questions – question types and the editor.
  • Quizzes – build a quiz from the groups.
