Signing in

How to sign in with your username or a linked Google or GitHub account, change a temporary password, and what to do when you forget your password.

The sign-in page is at /login. If you open any page of the app while signed out, you get the sign-in page first and return to that page once you are signed in.

You cannot create an account yourself: your teacher or your organisation’s administrator gives you a username and your first password.

  1. Open the sign-in page.
  2. If several ways to sign in are shown, choose Continue with username. If Google and GitHub sign-in are not enabled, the fields show at once.
  3. Enter your username and password.
  4. Select Sign in.
  • Usernames are not case-sensitive.
  • When Caps Lock is on, a warning appears under the password field.
  • The eye button at the end of the field (Show password) shows what you typed.
  • Back (or Esc) returns to the list of ways to sign in.

After signing in you land on My work, or on the page you were trying to open. If your password must be changed, the password change comes first, and on your first sign-in the first-run setup.

Every sign-in starts a new session; an earlier session in the same browser ends.

Message What it means
“Enter your username and password.” A field is empty.
“Incorrect username or password.” The username or the password is wrong. The same message appears when an account is disabled, so it never reveals whether an account exists.
“Too many attempts. Wait 15 minutes and try again.” After 10 wrong passwords within 15 minutes, that username cannot sign in for 15 minutes.
“Signing in is not available right now. Try again in a moment.” A temporary problem on the server.

A network address with 100 failed sign-ins within 15 minutes is locked for 15 minutes too: this stops password guessing without blocking many people who sign in from the same network. A temporary password from your teacher lifts the lock on your username early.

Continue with Google and Continue with GitHub appear only when your system administrator has turned this way of signing in on.

A Google or GitHub account signs you in only after you linked it to your account: in the first-run setup or in Settings → Security (Account security). The app never creates accounts this way and never matches people by email address.

  1. On the sign-in page, select Continue with Google or Continue with GitHub.
  2. On Google’s or GitHub’s page, choose your account. You are asked every time, so that on a shared computer you never sign in with someone else’s account by mistake.
  3. Back in the app, you are signed in just as with a password.

If it does not work, a message appears when you return (shown here for Google; the message names the service you used):

Message What to do
“This Google account is not linked yet. Sign in with your username and link it in Settings.” Sign in with your username and link the account in Settings → Security.
“This account cannot sign in. Ask your teacher for help.” Your account is disabled or has no password. Ask your teacher.
“Cancelled on Google. You can try again.” You stopped on Google’s or GitHub’s page.
“This attempt is no longer valid. Try again.” Signing in took longer than 10 minutes. Start again.
“Could not reach Google. Try again in a moment.” Google or GitHub is not reachable right now.
“Too many failed attempts. Wait a few minutes and try again.” Wait, then try again.
  • If your username is locked after wrong passwords, a linked account still signs you in.
  • If your password must be changed, you still have to change it after signing in with Google or GitHub.

A password set by your teacher or an administrator is temporary: 12 lowercase letters and digits in groups of four, such as abcd-2345-wxyz. When you sign in with it, the Choose a new password page opens, and no other page opens until you have changed it. The same page opens when your account is marked as needing a new password.

  1. In Current password, enter the password you just signed in with.
  2. In New password, enter your own password. The rules and a strength hint show under the field.
  3. Enter it again in Repeat new password.
  4. Select Change password.

If you do not want to change it now, select Sign out.

Your new password must:

  • be at least 10 and at most 128 characters long;
  • not start or end with a space;
  • not contain your username;
  • not be too easy to guess (for example 1234567890, or one character repeated);
  • differ from your current password;
  • be the same in both fields.

Capital letters, digits or symbols are not required: a long phrase makes a good password. The strength bar (“Weak”, “Fair”, “Good”, “Strong”) is only a hint; the rules decide what is accepted.

If a password is refused, the message says why and what you typed stays in the fields. Too many wrong current passwords lock the change for a while, like signing in.

After the change:

  • you stay signed in on this device;
  • you are signed out on every other device;
  • the first-run setup opens if you have not done it yet.

You can change your password yourself at any time: Account security.

There is no reset by email. On the sign-in page, Forgot your password? shows this advice: “Ask your teacher for a temporary password; you will change it after signing in.”

Your teacher, your group’s administrator or your organisation’s administrator can set a temporary password for you. They never see your password; they only set a new one. Setting it signs you out on every device and lifts a lock from too many attempts. Sign in with it and choose a new password as described above.

Below the form are the language buttons LT and EN. The language changes at once, and what you already typed stays in the fields. This browser remembers the choice. Until you choose, the app uses your browser’s language (Lithuanian or English), and Lithuanian otherwise.

Next to them, Docs opens this help site in a new browser tab.

In the account menu (your name at the bottom of the sidebar), choose Sign out. The same button is in Settings → Security.
