Excel task results
An Excel task's results table, a student's uploads with rule results, the teacher's score and comment, checking again, rule statistics and the export.
In an Excel task a student uploads an .xlsx workbook, and the app checks it automatically against the task’s grading rules. The rules, the starter workbook and the upload limit are set in the problem archive (see Excel tasks). This page covers how course staff review the results.
Where to find it
Section titled “Where to find it”Open an Excel task’s results page (/teaching/<course>/spreadsheets/<problem>):
- on the Problems page, by choosing Excel results in the problem’s … menu;
- by selecting an Excel upload on Submissions or Activity (that student’s uploads open);
- by selecting an Excel task’s tile in the progress sheet.
All course staff see the page; a group admin sees only their own groups’ students. At the top are Export .xlsx and Edit task (opens the task in the problem archive).
staff/teaching/excel-resultsThe results table
Section titled “The results table”Under the heading it says “Excel task · N rules · M points”. The table has a row per student:
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Student, Group | Who uploaded |
| Uploads | How many uploads were used; files not accepted are shown apart (“+N”) |
| Latest upload | The latest upload’s state (“changed” when a teacher set its score) or No uploads |
| Checked | When the latest upload was checked |
| Best | The best upload’s points, for example “8 / 10” |
The best upload counts (the newest of equal ones); a score set by a teacher counts as that upload’s score. Full marks mean the task is solved.
The table updates by itself when students upload or a check ends.
A student’s uploads
Section titled “A student’s uploads”Selecting a student opens their uploads (?student= in the address), newest first. Each upload shows:
- its state: Waiting to be checked, Checking, Checked, File not accepted or Could not be checked;
- its points and, when a teacher changed them, the automatic score;
- each rule’s result (Met, Partly met, Not met or Could not verify) with an explanation and examples (for example which cell held a different value);
- warnings when the workbook links to other files, has data connections or contains embedded objects;
- Download file: the original the student uploaded;
- “Checked again with updated rules” when the upload was checked again.
A file that was not accepted (for example an old .xls, a file with macros or a password-protected one) is marked “did not use up an upload”: it doesn’t reduce the student’s uploads (up to 10 such files per task version).
The teacher’s review
Section titled “The teacher’s review”Each checked upload has a Teacher’s review at the bottom:
- Enter the Score: a whole number from 0 to the maximum. An empty field means the automatic score.
- Optionally write a Comment for the student.
- Select Save.
Use the automatic score removes your score. While the file is being checked you can’t review it (“The file is still being checked; review it once the check ends.”).
The student sees the Teacher’s mark and the comment, and gets an inbox notification “Reviewed by your teacher” with the new score (unless they turned off Submission results notifications). The score change is recorded in the change history (the comment’s text is not).
Course owners, teachers and organisation admins can change scores; others see “Only owners and teachers of the course can change scores.”
Check again
Section titled “Check again”When you have fixed a grading rule and published a new version of the task, you can check the uploaded files against the new rules.
- Select Check again….
- Choose which uploads to check: Checked with earlier rules (the default) or All uploads. Each choice says how many uploads and students it affects, and below it lists the students whose scores may change.
- Select Check N uploads again.
Not checked again:
- uploads with a teacher’s score (use the automatic score first);
- uploads being checked at that moment;
- files the upload check refused (they are not workbooks).
Scores may go up or down; each student’s best upload still counts. Students see the new results on the task page and get a notification when the check ends. If the uploads changed while the dialog was open, the app asks you to look at the numbers again and confirm.
Course owners, teachers and organisation admins can check again.
Rule statistics
Section titled “Rule statistics”Under the table, the Rules section shows, for every rule of the current version, how many students’ counted (best) uploads met it, partly met it, did not meet it, and could not be verified. Uploads checked with earlier rules and files that could not be read are counted apart.
Export
Section titled “Export”Export .xlsx downloads an Excel workbook with two sheets:
- Results: a row per student you can see, with name, username, group, uploads, files not accepted, points and the maximum, whether a teacher set the score, the last upload, the state, the check time and each rule’s points;
- Rules: the rule statistics.
