Questions

Quiz question types, the question editor's fields, images, versions and how questions are graded.

Create a question in a question bank: select a group and click New question (see Question banks). Open an existing question with Edit in its row menu.

Type The student Grading
Single answer Picks one option. Automatic: full points or 0.
Multiple answers Picks several options. Automatic, by the quiz’s All or nothing or Partial credit setting.
Short answer Types a word or short phrase. Automatic: any accepted answer counts.
Number Types a number (with a comma or a point). Automatic: the difference from the correct value is within the tolerance.
Matching Connects each item on the left with its match on the right. Automatic: all pairs, or a share by the quiz’s setting.
Open answer Writes a free-text answer. A teacher grades it (an empty answer scores 0 automatically).
File upload Uploads one file of up to 9 MB. A teacher grades it.
  • Question group – the group that holds the question; here you can move it to another group of the same bank.
  • Type – can be changed later as well.
  • Question – the question text (up to 10,000 characters). The Preview beside it shows the question as students will see it.
  • The type’s own fields (see below).
  • Answers as students see them – a preview of the answers. When the quiz shuffles answers, students see them in a random order.

Click Save question or press Ctrl Enter. If you try to leave without saving, the browser warns you (You have unsaved changes.).

The question text takes simple markup:

Type You get
**text**, *text* Bold, italic
`code` Inline code
$x^2$ An inline formula
$$ on separate lines A display formula
- at the start of a line A list
``` A code block
  • Single answer, Multiple answers: 2–12 answers (text up to 500 characters, or an image). Mark the one correct answer (single) or every correct answer (multiple). Add answer, Remove answer N.
  • Short answer: 1–20 Accepted answers. Spaces at the ends and repeated spaces are ignored. With Letter case matters off, “Vilnius” and “vilnius” are the same answer.
  • Number: the Correct value and the Tolerance (±); 0 means the exact value.
  • Matching: 2–12 pairs (Item – text or an image; Match – text up to 300 characters). Items and matches must differ from each other. The right column is shuffled for every student.
  • Open answer: no extra fields.
  • File upload: Allowed file types – xlsx (the default), xls, csv, docx, pdf, txt, png, jpg, zip; choose at least one.
  • Grading notes (open answers and files) – only teachers see them, for example what a full answer contains.
Images can go into the question text (Add image, paste or drop), onto choice answers and onto matching items.
  • PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF are accepted (SVG is not), up to 9 MB, at most 10,000 pixels per side and 40 megapixels.
  • Every image needs a Description (up to 500 characters) – the question can’t be saved without it.
  • A question holds at most 20 images.
  • Replace and Remove change an image. Images are uploaded to the bank; location and camera data are removed from the files.
  • While a question has not been used in any attempt, saving changes it in place.
  • When you edit a used question, the editor says: This question was used in N attempts. Saving creates version M; those attempts keep the version their students saw.
  • Each row in the bank shows the question’s version.
A question imported from the old system may hold formatting the question editor can’t keep. A warning then says what saving changes:
  • headings, notes, warnings and hints become ordinary paragraphs (their text stays);
  • links become plain text, and so does inline code that contains a backtick (`);
  • images from the old system, sample-test blocks and anything after the first paragraph of a list item are removed.
Images uploaded in the question editor, code blocks and equations are kept.
An archived question can be opened, but new attempts don’t draw it (This question is archived: new attempts do not draw it.). A question can’t be saved into an archived group – restore the group or choose another one.
If you can’t change the bank, the question’s fields are disabled (You can view this question but not change it.).
