Messages and announcements
Students' questions and conversations with them, replies, resolving, and announcements to the whole course or to chosen groups.
A course’s Messages page (/teaching/<course>/messages) has two lists: Conversations (students’ questions and the conversations you started) and Announcements (your news to the whole course or to groups). The number of unread conversations shows in the sidebar next to Messages.

Section titled “Who sees conversations”Each conversation belongs to one student. That student and the course staff who can see that student read it. Other students never see it.

The conversation list
Section titled “The conversation list”- Open (the default), Resolved, All: by state.
- Group and Problem: filters; Clear removes them.
- Unread conversations are marked. An open conversation whose last message is the student’s is marked Awaiting reply.
- A conversation is listed by its subject, or when it has none, by the linked problem’s title or the first words of the message.
Move through the list with J and K. The list and the open conversation update by themselves.

Section titled “A conversation”An open conversation shows the student, their group, the linked problem or submission, and every message.

- Mark as resolved moves the conversation to Resolved (“Resolved (date) · (name)”); Reopen brings it back to the open ones. When the student replies to a resolved conversation, it becomes open again.
Start a conversation with a student from their panel on the People page or from a submission panel (Message); see Students.
Notifications
Section titled “Notifications”- When a student starts a conversation, the course’s owners, teachers and assistants and the admin of the student’s group get a New conversation item in their inbox; organisation admins don’t.
- Replies in conversations arrive as Reply.
- You can turn these notifications off under Settings → Notifications (Questions and replies); the course page still shows every conversation.
Announcements
Section titled “Announcements”An announcement is news for many students at once. Course owners, teachers and assistants can publish announcements.

- Choose the Recipients: Whole course or Selected groups (tick at least one group). The choice appears when the course has groups.

Students get the announcement in their inbox and see it in the course messages. The announcement shows its author, the publishing date and the number of recipients (“24 recipients”).
- An announcement to a group reaches the students enrolled through that group and the members of that group and its subgroups.
- Students added to the course or the group later also see earlier announcements addressed to them.
- A published announcement can’t be edited or deleted.
- A group that an announcement is addressed to can’t be detached from the course; you can only end its students’ enrolments (see Groups and staff).
