Roles and permissions
Organisation, group and course roles, what each allows, and who can reset whose password.
Roles exist on three levels: the organisation, the group and the course. One person can hold several, for example be a teacher of the organisation, a group’s teacher and a course owner. Above them is the system administrator, who can do everything on the platform (system administrator’s guide).
Organisation roles
Section titled “Organisation roles”| Role | What it allows | How it is given |
|---|---|---|
| Admin | Manages the organisation’s users, groups, courses and admins; opens any course of the organisation. Can do everything a teacher can. | In the organisation panel: Add admin. |
| Teacher | Creates courses and uses the problem archive in the organisation, without administering it. | Make teacher… in the user panel; automatically when someone becomes a group’s teacher, or when their admin role is removed. |
| Member | Belongs to the organisation: reads its wiki pages, and can be added to its groups and courses. | When the account is created in the organisation, or when a system administrator adds the user to it. |
Students’ accounts are usually organisation members with no other role.
Group roles
Section titled “Group roles”| Role | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Teacher (group admin) | Adds the group to courses they work in; in those courses sees the students who came through their groups (and subgroups), their submissions and progress, writes to them and can reset their passwords; can open and close topics for their groups. Doesn’t open Administration. |
| Member | Is enrolled as a student in the group’s courses through the group. |
A group’s teacher also becomes a teacher of the organisation. The same person can’t be both a member and a teacher of a group.
Course roles
Section titled “Course roles”| Ability | Owner | Teacher | Assistant | Student |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sees every student’s submissions and progress in the course | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | Own only |
| Changes topics, problems and deadlines | ✓ | ✓ | – | – |
| Changes the course settings | ✓ | ✓ | – | – |
| Enrols students and adds groups | ✓ | ✓ | – | – |
| Gives individual tasks | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | – |
| Posts announcements and replies to students | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | – |
| Resets students’ passwords | ✓ | ✓ | – | – |
| Manages the course staff (owners, teachers, assistants) | ✓ | – | – | – |
| Archives the course | ✓ | – | – | – |
- A course always keeps at least one owner.
- An organisation admin can do in their organisation’s courses what an owner can, even without working in the course.
- Students see only their own work. The one exception: while a course shows it, its students see their group’s reduced progress sheet (who solved which common problem, nothing more).
Who can reset whose password
Section titled “Who can reset whose password”| Who resets | Whose |
|---|---|
| System administrator | Everyone’s except system administrators’. |
| Organisation admin | Their organisation’s members’, teachers included, but not organisation or system admins’. |
| Course owner or teacher | Their course’s students’. |
| Group teacher | Members of their groups and subgroups, and students enrolled through those groups. |
Course owners, teachers and group teachers can’t reset the password of someone who holds a staff role themselves (course staff, group or organisation teacher or admin), so nobody can take over a colleague’s account. Nobody resets their own password this way: change it in Settings → Security.
Where to do it: in the user panel in Administration, or in a course’s People.
