Quizzes
How to start a quiz, how the timer works, the question types, how answers are saved, submitting, and when you see results.
A quiz is a set of questions whose answers are mostly graded automatically, and some by your teacher. A quiz can also be a test.
Where to find them
Section titled “Where to find them”- Under the course’s Quizzes (address
/courses/<course>/quizzes). Quizzes are grouped into “Open now”, “Coming up” and “Finished”. - Under the course’s Problems, if the quiz is placed in a topic: it shows at the end of that topic.
Each row shows the title, the topic, the number of questions, the time limit, when the quiz runs (“Opens …”, “Open until …”, “Closed …”), the state of your attempts and, once results are shown, your best points.
Only published quizzes are listed. If your teacher unpublishes a quiz, it (and its results) disappears from your list.
The start page
Section titled “The start page”Select a quiz to open its start page. Rules lists:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Time window | When you can start: “Any time”, “From …”, “Until …” or a period. Your group’s times may differ from other groups’ |
| Time limit | How many minutes you have from the start, or “No limit” |
| Questions | The number of questions and the total points |
| Attempts | How many attempts are left, e.g. “1 of 2 left”, or “Unlimited” |
| Pass mark | The share of points needed to pass (when set) |
| Going back | “Allowed”, or “Not allowed: answers are final once you go on” |
| Results | What you’ll see after submitting (see Results) |
Below is Your attempts: each attempt with its state, start time, time used and, when shown, points. Select an attempt to open its result.
When you can’t start, the reason replaces the button, e.g. “The quiz opens …”, “The quiz has closed.” or “You have used all your attempts.”
Starting
Section titled “Starting”- On the start page, choose Start quiz.
- In “Start the quiz?”, read how much time you will have. The timer starts now and keeps running even if you close the page.
- Choose Start quiz.
If you have already started an attempt, you see Continue instead of Start quiz – you return to the same questions with the time that is left.
Every student gets their own set of questions: questions may be drawn at random from your teacher’s question groups, and their order and the order of the options may be shuffled.
Taking the quiz
Section titled “Taking the quiz”students/learning/quiz-takingYou see one question at a time: its number (“Question 3 of 10”), its question group and how many points it is worth.
- The timer at the top shows the time left. Time is counted on the server, so reloading the page doesn’t stop it. Without a time limit but with an end time, it counts down to the end; with neither, it shows “No time limit”.
- Question numbers at the top let you jump to any question. Answered questions are highlighted, and the current one is in the accent colour. When going back is not allowed, a progress bar replaces the numbers, with “You cannot go back to earlier questions in this quiz.”
- Previous and Next move by one question. Previous is shown only when going back is allowed.
Question types
Section titled “Question types”| Type | How to answer |
|---|---|
| Single answer | Choose one option. Clear answer removes your choice |
| Multiple answers | Tick every correct option |
| Short answer | Type a word or short phrase. Upper and lower case usually don’t matter |
| Number | Type a number. Use a comma or a point for decimals, e.g. “3,14” |
| Matching | For each line, choose the matching item from the list |
| Open answer | Write your answer freely. Your teacher grades it |
| File upload | Choose Choose a file. Below the button it says which files are allowed and the maximum size (up to 9 MB). You can replace or remove the file. Your teacher grades it |
Select an image in a question to enlarge it; in an option, use the button in the image’s corner.
How answers are saved
Section titled “How answers are saved”Answers save automatically: choices at once, text after you pause, and everything before you move to another question. At the top you see “Saving…”, “Saved” or “Not saved. Retrying…” – the app then tries again by itself. If you try to close the page with unsaved answers, the browser asks whether you really want to leave.
When going back is not allowed, an answer becomes final once you move to the next question.
Submitting
Section titled “Submitting”- Choose Finish quiz (on the last question it is highlighted).
- “Finish the quiz?” shows how many questions are not answered. You cannot change your answers after finishing.
- Choose Finish, or go back with Keep working.
With 5 minutes left you see “5 minutes left. Check your answers.”, and with less than a minute “Less than a minute left. The quiz will be submitted automatically.” When time runs out, your answers are submitted automatically (“Time is up. Your answers are being submitted…”). If your teacher closes the quiz early, the next time an answer is saved you see “The quiz has ended; answers can no longer be changed.”, and the attempt is submitted automatically.
If you closed the page and time ran out, the attempt is finished with the answers that were saved. Its result says “Submitted when time ran out”.
Results
Section titled “Results”What you see after submitting is set by your teacher. The start page shows it under Results:
| Results | What you see |
|---|---|
| Your teacher will look at them; they are not shown here | Only that your answers were submitted: “Your answers were submitted. Your teacher will review them.” |
| Your points after submitting | Points, percent, whether you passed, the mark out of 10 and the time used |
| Your points and answers after submitting | Also each question with your answer, its points and your teacher’s comment |
If the results rule adds “Shown when the quiz closes”, results appear only after the quiz’s time window ends. Until then you see “Your results will be shown after the quiz closes.”
When answers are shown, each is marked “Correct” or “Wrong”. Correct answers are shown only if your teacher allowed it; otherwise it says “Correct answers are not shown for this quiz.”
Until your teacher has graded open answers or files, the attempt is “Awaiting review” and the points may still change. The mark out of 10 comes from the share of points earned. Your best graded attempt can count in the course’s grades.
Leaving-window tracking
Section titled “Leaving-window tracking”For quizzes in an assessment topic, your teacher can turn on leaving-window tracking. You then see, on the start page and before starting: “Leaving the window is recorded during this test. The number of exits and the time away will be visible to your teacher.”
An exit is recorded when you:
- switch to another browser tab or minimise the window;
- click another window or app;
- close the page, or open another page or tab in the app.
The file picker of a file-upload question doesn’t count as an exit. When you come back, you see the reminder “You left the quiz window.”; close it with Got it.
Your teacher sees the number of exits, the time away, and the times of the first and last exit. It is only a risk indicator, not proof: the browser cannot see what happened outside the quiz window and records nothing of your screen.
