Students

The course's student list, when a student needs attention, the student panel and its actions – message, password reset, moving to another group, removal and individual tasks.

The People page (/teaching/<course>/people) has three tabs: Students, Groups and Staff. This page covers the Students tab; groups and staff are on Groups and staff.

The list shows only students you can see: a group admin sees only students enrolled through their own groups.

Columns: Name (with the username), Group, Progress (problems solved out of those given, with a bar), Last submission and Attention.

  • Sort by selecting a column heading; select it again to reverse the order. On first choice, Name sorts A–Z, Progress puts the weakest first, and Last submission the most recent first.
  • All / Needs attention: show everyone, or only the students who need attention (both show a count).
  • Group: one group’s students, or Without a group (individually enrolled students).

Filters and sorting are part of the address. The list updates by itself: new submissions and enrolment changes appear within seconds.

Bring students into the course with Add groups and Enrol students; see Groups and staff.

A student is listed under Needs attention when at least one of these holds:

Label When
N overdue Unsolved problems whose deadline passed within the last 14 days, while the topic is still open. Shown only for students clearly behind the others: the share of the already-due problems they solved is at least 20 percentage points below the median of the students in view.
N failed attempts At least 5 failed attempts in the last 7 days on one open problem they haven’t solved.
N days without submissions or No submissions yet No submission for 7 days (or ever), while some unsolved problem has been open for at least 7 days, and the student joined at least 7 days ago.

In the Needs attention view the most urgent students come first: more reasons, more overdue problems, more failed attempts, a longer silence. Choosing a column sorts by that column instead. The five most urgent students also appear on the course overview.

Selecting a student opens their panel on the right:

  • the name, the username and when they last submitted;
  • the action bar: Message, Reset password…, Move to group… and … → Remove from course… (only the actions you may take are shown);
  • Needs attention: every reason in full;
  • Solved, In progress, Submissions: counts;
  • the links Submissions (all of the student’s submissions) and Progress table (their group’s progress sheet);
  • By topic: each problem’s state; selecting one opens the latest submission for it;
  • Latest submissions: the five newest;
  • Individual tasks: when the course has them.
  1. In the student panel, select Message.
  2. Enter a Subject (optional, up to 160 characters) and the Message (up to 10,000 characters). Put code between lines with ```. You can preview the message before sending.
  3. Select Send.

The student sees the message in the course messages and in their inbox; the course’s other staff can read it too. After sending you can select Open conversation. When you write from a submission panel, the submission is attached (About); you can remove the link.

Owners, teachers, assistants and group admins (for their own groups’ students) can write. Organisation admins only read conversations. More on Messages and announcements.

When a student forgets their password:

  1. In the student panel, select Reset password….
  2. Confirm with Reset password. The student is signed out everywhere, and their password is replaced with a temporary one.
  3. The dialog shows the Username and the Temporary password. Copy it (Copy password) and give it to the student.
  4. Select Done.

Owners, teachers, organisation admins and group admins (for their own groups’ students) can reset passwords; assistants can’t. Passwords of users who are a teacher or an admin anywhere are reset only by an organisation admin.

When a student switches groups (for example from one half of a class to the other):

  1. In the student panel, select Move to group….
  2. Choose a group. This course’s groups come first, marked In this course; each shows its number of members.
  3. Under What changes, review the effect on each course: Joins the course, Leaves the course; their work stays or Stays, now through the new group.
  4. Select Move to ….

The student leaves the group through which they take this course and joins the chosen one (if they took the course without a group, they only join). This changes the organisation’s group membership, so every course those groups take changes with it. Submissions and results stay where they are. The move is recorded in the administration change history.

Organisation admins can move students into any group of the organisation; course owners and teachers only between groups they administer themselves. When no suitable group exists, the button is hidden.

  1. In the student panel, select … → Remove from course….
  2. Confirm with Remove student.

The student’s enrolment ends, but their submissions and results stay in the course; enrolling them again brings everything back. Their group membership doesn’t change. Owners, teachers and organisation admins can remove students.

Individual tasks appear when the course’s topics have individual task slots (imported from the old system). For each slot, choose a problem from the topic’s task pool, or Not assigned. The choice is saved at once. The pool itself is managed in the topic panel; see Topics.

  • When the topic’s pool is empty, it says “This topic’s task pool is empty. Add problems to it in the topic’s panel.”
  • When a student’s problem has left the pool, they keep it and the list marks it “(no longer in the pool)”; it isn’t offered to other students.
  • A slot a teacher already checked in the old system can’t be changed or cleared (“Already checked; it can’t be changed.”): the checks and marks belong to that problem.

Owners, teachers, assistants and organisation admins can give individual tasks.
