Subpages and page order

Creating subpages, dragging pages in the tree, the keyboard, "Move to…" and a page's location.

A page can have subpages, and those their own subpages, as many levels deep as you need. There are no folders: the pages themselves make up the tree. The tree appears on the wiki’s home, in the sidebar and beside a page you are reading.

  • A page and its subpages always have the same readers: public pages go under public pages, and an organisation’s pages under that organisation’s pages.
  • You can move only pages you edit, and only under pages you edit.
  • A page can’t go under itself or one of its subpages.
  • A page moves together with all its subpages.
  • Moving a page changes neither its text nor its last-change date.
  • Archived pages can’t be moved.
  1. Open the page and select Add subpage in the header. Or, on the wiki’s home, open the page row’s menu (⋯) and choose Add subpage.
  2. Enter a title. The readers come from the page, so there is nothing to choose.
  3. Select Create page.

The subpage starts as a draft and goes to the end of the page’s subpages. You can add a subpage only to a page you edit that isn’t archived.

The wiki’s home (/wiki, without a search) shows the page tree. Drag pages you edit by the handle at the left of their row (it appears when you point at the row):

  • onto the upper or lower edge of a row: the page goes before or after that row;
  • onto the middle of a row: the page becomes its last subpage;
  • near the edge of the list: the list scrolls;
  • Esc cancels the drag.

Places where the page can’t go are not highlighted. The change shows at once. If the server refuses it (for example, another editor has just changed the tree), the page goes back to where it was and the reason appears above the tree.

Focus a page’s handle (Tab) and use:

Key Action
↑ / ↓ Move up or down among pages on the same level
→ Make it a subpage of the page above
← Move one level up

The handle keeps focus after each move, so you can keep moving the page.

Every row of a page you edit has a ⋯ menu: Open, Add subpage, Move up, Move down, Make it a subpage of the page above, Move one level up and Move to…. Actions that aren’t possible are disabled.

  1. Choose Move to… in the row menu, or select the Location field in the page’s settings.
  2. Pick the new place in the tree: a page, or Top level. Pages that can’t take it are dimmed: the page itself and its subpages, pages you don’t edit, and pages with other readers.
  3. Select Move here.

The page becomes the last subpage of the page you chose. The Location field shows the path to the page (for example “Loops / The for loop”) or Top level.

Everyone sees only the pages they may read in the tree. If a reader can’t see a page (for example, it is a draft), its published subpages appear in its place: under the nearest page they can see, or at the top level.

Only a system administrator can change readers (the Readers field in the page’s settings).

  • The readers of a page with subpages can’t change: move the subpages elsewhere first.
  • A subpage whose readers change moves to the top level, because its former parent page has other readers.

A page with subpages is never removed by accident: the confirmation asks whether its subpages move one level up or are archived with it. More in Archiving and deleting.
