Quizzes
How to create a quiz in a course from the question bank, set its question plan, settings and per-group times, publish, archive or delete it.
A quiz is a set of questions that each student gets drawn at random from the question bank. Questions are written and kept in the problem archive’s Quiz questions section, grouped into question groups (see Question banks). In the course you say how many questions to draw from each group and set the times.
| Who | Can |
|---|---|
| Owner, teacher, organisation admin | Create, change, publish, archive and delete quizzes |
| Group admin | Open, close and change a quiz’s time for their own groups |
| Assistant | See the settings and the results |
Reviewing results and grading answers is on Quiz results.
The quiz list
Section titled “The quiz list”The course’s Quizzes page (/teaching/<course>/quizzes) lists each quiz:
- Quiz and Topic;
- When: “Draft, not published”, “Opens …”, “Open until …”, “Open, no end” or “Closed …”;
- Questions: the number of questions and points;
- Submitted: how many of the students you can see have submitted;
- To grade: how many answers wait for your grading.
Icons show that leaving the window is recorded and that some groups have their own time. Archived quizzes are listed apart at the bottom. Selecting a quiz opens its results.
A quiz placed in a topic also appears in that topic’s section on the Problems page (with its state, the number who submitted and the answers waiting for grading), and for students in that topic.
New quiz
Section titled “New quiz”- Select New quiz.
- Enter the Name, for example “Excel formulas test”.
- Choose the Course topic or No topic.
- Select Create: the quiz’s edit page opens.
A new quiz starts as a draft. In an assessment topic it gets a 45-minute duration, one attempt and leaving-window recording right away; elsewhere, unlimited time and attempts. You can change all of this.
Questions
Section titled “Questions”Under Questions you build the quiz’s plan:
- Select Add question group and choose a group from the question banks you can see (each group shows how many of its questions can be used).
- Set Questions to draw (shown “of N”) and Points each (above 0, up to 100).
- Select Save questions.
Each student gets a different random set: the set number of questions is drawn from each group (without repeats), then, if turned on, questions and answers are shuffled. The set is drawn when the attempt starts and stored, so reloading the page doesn’t change it.
- Each group can be added once; a quiz has up to 100 questions.
- When a group has fewer questions than the quiz draws, it says “Not enough questions in: …” and the quiz can’t be published.
- Once students have taken the quiz, changes apply to new attempts only; finished attempts keep exactly the questions they had.

Section titled “Settings”After changing settings, select Save settings. Times are in Lithuanian time.
General
- Name and Course topic: students find the quiz in this topic.
Time
- Start: empty means when the topic opens (shown greyed in the field), or as soon as it is published for a quiz without a topic.
- End: attempts end at this time at the latest. Empty means when the topic closes (its hard close, or its deadline if it has none), or no end for a quiz without a topic.
- Duration: the time for one attempt, 1–1440 minutes; empty means no limit. An attempt ends at its start plus the duration, but no later than the quiz’s end.
- Attempts: 1–20; empty means unlimited.
Grading and results
- Pass mark: the share of points (0–100 %) needed to pass; empty means no pass mark.
- Scoring of multiple answers and matching: All or nothing (points only when every choice or pair is right) or Partial credit (points for each right pair; wrong choices cancel right ones). Other question types are right or wrong; open answers and files are graded by you.
- What students see after submitting: Only that it was submitted, Points (points, percent and pass mark) or Points and answers (also each question with their answer and your comment).
- Show correct answers: available only when students see points and answers.
- Show results only after the quiz ends: so that students who finish early can’t pass answers to others.
Students never see other students’ answers or points.
The same applies to students’ Grades page: a quiz’s mark shows there only once they can see their points; until then the activity reads “Not marked yet”. You always see every mark.
Taking the quiz
- Allow going back: otherwise students can answer only the current and later questions.
- Shuffle questions and Shuffle answers: a different order for each student (a matching question’s right column is always shuffled).
- Record leaving the window: only for quizzes in an assessment topic. Before starting, and again when they come back to the quiz, students see the warning “Leaving the window is recorded during this test. The number of exits and the time away will be visible to your teacher.” It is a risk indicator, not proof.
Time by group
Section titled “Time by group”Time by group shows an All students row and a row for each group of the course with its state (“Opens …”, “Open until …”, “Ended …”).
- A group can get its own Start and End. Empty fields follow the group’s schedule for the topic, if it has one (“follows the group’s topic schedule”), otherwise the quiz’s time, otherwise the topic’s. Use quiz time removes the group’s own quiz time.
- A quiz in a topic without its own time follows the topic (“follows the topic”). Open now and Close now on the topic for a group open and close the topic’s quizzes for that group too, even when the quiz has its own time. Only the quiz’s own time for that group takes precedence.
- Open now: the quiz opens from now until the end of its duration plus 5 minutes (45 minutes without a duration).
- Close now: the quiz ends now.
When an end moves earlier, running attempts end no later than the new end. This applies to Close now, a new date, or a group’s time, on the quiz or on its topic. A later end never extends an attempt that has started.
The All students row’s buttons are for course owners, teachers and organisation admins; the group rows also for those groups’ admins.
Publishing
Section titled “Publishing”The top of the page shows the state (Draft, Published or Archived) and a button:
- Publish: students see the quiz according to its time. A quiz can be published only when its plan has questions and every group has enough of them.
- Unpublish: students no longer see the quiz or their results until you publish it again; attempts and answers are kept.
Danger zone
Section titled “Danger zone”- Archive the quiz: students no longer see it or their results; attempts, answers and points stay. Restore the quiz brings it back as a draft, while Restore and publish at the top publishes it at once.
- Delete the quiz: possible only while no student has taken it; the quiz, its settings and its plan are deleted for good, and the questions stay in the question bank. When attempts exist, the quiz can only be archived.
